Conditions in a גט: how strongly רבי's view is shown, binding deadlines, the lost coat, forgiving the payment, the rain-watered field, and payment given against the husband's will.
Overview
This amud begins by defending רב יהודה. A ברייתא shows רבי and חכמים arguing about a גט given 'from today and after death,' and the גמרא explains that it chose that case to show how far רבי's lenient view goes, since showing the strength of a lenient view is preferred. Next, the גמרא explains why the משנה must say that a thirty-day deadline is a real condition, and it fills in missing words in the משנה: רבנן and רבן שמעון בן גמליאל argue about a lost coat, and the story in צידן supports רבן שמעון בן גמליאל. רבי אסי asks what happens if a husband forgives the 200 זוז he made a condition of the גט, and רבי יוחנן rules that she is not divorced. A משנה about vows is brought against him, but the גמרא answers that a husband's condition is meant to burden her, while a vow's condition was only for gain. The same idea settles an argument between רב יוסף and רבה about a sharecropper whose fourth watering was done by rain, and it shows that both can follow רבנן. Finally, רבא learns from הלל's enactment about houses in walled cities that a wife's payment forced on her husband against his will does not fulfill the condition of a גט. His proof continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
וְהָתַנְיָא:
And it was taught in a ברייתא:
״מֵהַיּוֹם וּלְאַחַר מִיתָה״ –
[If he said: This is your גט] 'from today and after [my] death' –
גֵּט וְאֵינוֹ גֵּט, דִּבְרֵי חֲכָמִים;
it is a גט and not a גט, these are the words of the Sages;
רַבִּי אוֹמֵר: כָּזֶה – גֵּט.
Rabbi says: [a case] like this is a [valid] גט.
