Conditions in a גט: returning the paper, a dying man's wording, and serving the father or nursing the son
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a discussion about a ברייתא where a man gives a גט on condition that the paper be returned to him. רב אדא בר אהבה says the condition is void because the condition and the action are about the same thing. רב אשי instead says the ברייתא follows רבי, for whom 'על מנת' works like 'מעכשיו', so the divorce takes effect right away. Next, שמואל sets a wording for the גט of a dying man. The גמרא explains why the negative side comes first, and רבא then replaces it with a three-part wording that puts 'yes' before 'no', as in the condition of בני גד ובני ראובן. A new משנה follows about a גט given on condition that the wife serve the husband's father or nurse his son. The time allowed, and what happens if the son or father dies, depend on whether a time was stated, and רבן שמעון בן גמליאל disagrees. The גמרא contrasts this משנה with a ברייתא that says one day is enough, and רב חסדא, רבא and רב אשי each answer differently. The amud ends with a new objection to רב אשי, which continues on the next amud.
