Combining separate eatings within כדי אכילת פרס: רבי מאיר and חכמים, the refutation of רבנאי, and the rules of impure food, immersion, a pregnant woman and a nursing baby
Overview
The גמרא first proves from the exact wording of חכמים in the משנה ('עד שישהא') that רבי מאיר's ruling is a stringency. Next, רבנאי quotes שמואל: for חלבים and נבילה, the whole כזית must be eaten within כדי אכילת פרס. For impure foods and liquids, the eating counts even over a whole day. רב פפא explains this to mean that each כזית must be eaten within כדי אכילת פרס. A ברייתא then says that separate eatings of impure food or drink combine only if the time from the first bite to the last fits within כדי אכילת פרס, and רבנאי is refuted. The גמרא goes on to explain other lines of that ברייתא. Immersing in the middle of eating is forbidden, so a person won't rely on an immersion that doesn't count. A pregnant woman may eat in small portions, even a lot in total, because of danger. The ברייתא also says the baby of an impure nursing mother stays pure. רב נחמן's explanation for this is rejected by רבא, who says the baby is pure because of a double doubt about the amount he drank and the time it took. Finally, the גמרא challenges רבא's view that a woman's milk is like a spring and needs no הכשר, and begins quoting a ברייתא about a זב's liquids that continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
אִי אָמְרַתְּ בִּשְׁלָמָא רַבִּי מֵאִיר לְחוּמְרָא,
It works well if you say that Rabbi Meir ruled as a stringency,
הַיְינוּ דְקָתָנֵי: ״עַד שֶׁיִּשְׁהֶא״,
that is why it teaches: 'unless he spends',
עַד דִּשְׁהִיָּ[ה] דִּילֵיהּ כְּדֵי אֲכִילַת פְּרָס.
meaning: unless his time spent is within the time of eating a half-loaf.
אֶלָּא אִי אָמְרַתְּ רַבִּי מֵאִיר לְקוּלָּא,
But if you say that Rabbi Meir ruled as a leniency,
The steps (27)
- ProofThe wording of חכמים fits if רבי מאיר is being strict
- ChallengeIf רבי מאיר were lenient, חכמים should have used different words
- ConclusionConclusion: רבי מאיר is being strict
- Statementשמואל's rules for forbidden foods and for impure foods
- QuestionWhat does שמואל mean?
- Responseרב פפא: the whole day, as long as each כזית is within the time limit
- ChallengeA ברייתא seems to require the whole half-פרס within the time limit
- ResolutionThe ברייתא means each כזית within the time limit
- ChallengeA second ברייתא says start to finish must fit in the time limit
- StatementThe ברייתא continues: immersing in the middle and a pregnant woman
- StatementThe ברייתא gives the same time limit for liquids
- StatementA nursing mother who touched a corpse-impure person may nurse her baby
- ConclusionThe ברייתא conclusively refutes רבנאי
- QuestionWhat does 'they did not permit him to immerse' mean?
- Responseרב יהודה: the rule stops a person from relying on an immersion that does not count
- ChallengeWhy only less than the measure if there is danger?
- Resolutionרב פפא: small portions, even if the total is a lot
- ChallengeWhy does the nursing baby stay pure?
- ChallengeBlocking the answer that the milk was never made susceptible
- ResolutionOne strong suck leaves no drop
- Rejectionרבא: two problems with the one-suck answer
- ProofA משנה about a woman's milk
- ProofUnwanted milk still counts
- Resolutionרבא's own reason: a double doubt
- ChallengeQuestioning רבא's view of the milk's source
- ChallengeMilk dripping into an oven shows that a woman's milk needs הכשר
- Challengeרבא cannot simply disagree with רבי יוחנן, because a ברייתא lists the liquids of a זב
