An ארוסה and תרומה: עולא vs. רב שמואל בר רב יהודה, אביי's limits on רבי טרפון and רבי עקיבא, the יבם, and the משנה ראשונה

Overview

This amud opens with the end of a ברייתא about selling a slave. Small flaws in a slave do not cancel the sale, and big flaws are publicly known, so סימפון is not a worry with slaves. The גמרא then asks how עולא differs from רב שמואל בר רב יהודה. עולא worries about wine in her father's house, and רב שמואל בר רב יהודה worries about סימפון. The answer is that they differ in the cases of קיבל, מסר and הלך. Next, אביי limits the argument between רבי טרפון and רבי עקיבא about feeding a betrothed woman תרומה: it covers only a בת כהן and only an ארוסה. A ברייתא supports him and adds more opinions, and רבי יהודה and רבן שמעון בן גמליאל differ only over the effort of selling תרומה. The גמרא then explains from the פסוק 'קנין כספו' why a יבם does not let his יבמה eat תרומה. It also explains that the משנה orders its cases as 'זו ואין צריך לומר זו'. Finally, it gives סימפון as the reason the later משנה delays תרומה until the חופה. It begins to check this against עולא's view, and the challenge continues on the next amud.
