The daughter's dowry-tenth: collecting it from mortgaged land, whether she is an heir or a creditor, and stories about collecting it
Overview
רב sends רבי a question about brothers who 'שיעבדו' their father's land: can the daughters still collect their dowry from it? רבי answers that whether the land was sold or pledged, the court takes it back for פרנסה (dowry) but not for מזונות (food). The גמרא explains that רב used the broad word on purpose, so one answer would cover both cases. רבי יוחנן disagrees, and the גמרא asks whether he never heard רבי's ruling or rejected it. A proof from a case of two daughters whose brother died is pushed aside. אמימר first holds that a daughter collecting her tenth is an heir, but רב אשי says she is a creditor, and אמימר comes to agree. A story about רבינא shows she is the brothers' creditor, not the father's. The amud ends with stories about collecting the tenth, including רב הונא's sharp reply to רב ענן, which continues on the next amud.
