Honoring an אבל and רבא's ruling on collecting from heirs; the dispute over a daughter's money held by a שליש; and the start of אילפא's challenge
Overview
The amud opens by finishing the story of רב ענן's letter. מר עוקבא scolds him for writing to רב הונא as an equal when he did not even know that מרזיחא means a mourner. רבי אבהו and מר זוטרא each bring a פסוק showing that an אבל sits at the head. רבא then rules that food support, the כתובה and a daughter's dowry are collected from the heirs' land only. A new משנה follows: a father leaves money with a שליש to buy a field for his daughter, and she asks that it go to her husband. רבי מאיר and רבי יוסי argue whether she can override the father. Using a ברייתא and the משנה's last line, the גמרא shows that both agree a קטנה has no say, and that they disagree only about a גדולה during אירוסין. שמואל rules like רבי יוסי, and רב נחמן rules like רבי מאיר. Finally, אילפא claims he can find every ברייתא in a משנה. An old man tests him with a case about a father who gave his sons a weekly שקל, and the answer continues on the next amud.
