Does ביאה create only אירוסין or full נישואין? The גמרא tests this with a ברייתא and with the letter between יוחנן בן בג בג and רבי יהודה בן בתירא about an ארוסה eating תרומה.

Overview

The גמרא asks whether קידושין through ביאה creates only אירוסין or full נישואין. It first finishes a ברייתא about a young girl betrothed through ביאה, then tries to prove from its wording that ביאה is only אירוסין. That proof is rejected. Next comes a letter in which יוחנן בן בג בג asks רבי יהודה בן בתירא why a betrothed בת ישראל may eat תרומה, and he answers with a קל וחומר from a שפחה כנענית. The גמרא works out that the letter must be about ביאה without a חופה. Since רבי יהודה בן בתירא treats ביאה as obvious and needs a קל וחומר for כסף, the גמרא argues that ביאה alone makes נישואין. רב נחמן בר יצחק rejects this proof by reading the case as ביאה with a חופה, and he explains why בן בג בג did not accept the קל וחומר. רבינא offers another rejection: the letter was only about a rabbinic worry, סימפון, and the reply about it continues onto the next amud.
