The source for liability for eating קדשים in טומאה, even without מתירין; then the new משנה on the five חטאות left to die
Overview
The משנה taught that the rule against eating קדשים in טומאה applies whether or not an item has מתירין. The גמרא asks for the source and brings a ברייתא. The ברייתא first suggests a קל וחומר from פיגול: פיגול is stricter than טומאה, yet it applies only to items with מתירין, so טומאה should be limited too. A פסוק in ויקרא 22:3 rejects this and includes all קדשים. The ברייתא then asks when liability begins and points to the words "אשר יקרב". רבי אלעזר explains that items with מתירין make one liable once the מתירין are offered, and items without מתירין make one liable once they are made holy in a כלי. The chapter חטאת העוף then ends. A new משנה lists the five חטאות that are left to die, and gives the rules for a lost חטאת found blemished after the owner was already atoned for.
