Explaining the רבי/רבנן dispute about a doubtful large מנחה vow, then the minimum amounts for pledges of wood, לבונה and metals
Overview
The amud opens by asking why רבי and the רבנן disagree about a person who is unsure how big a מנחה he vowed. One problem is raised first: burning an extra handful might break בל תקטירו. It is answered with רבי אליעזר's rule that something may be burned לשום עצים, as fuel. רב אחא's idea that the dispute is about רבי אליעזר's rule is rejected by רב אשי. רבא then explains the dispute through the oil argument between רבי אליעזר בן יעקב and the רבנן. רב אשי explains it as the question of owing a small offering and bringing a big one, and the גמרא shows why that argument must be taught in two places. After a סימן, a new משנה gives the minimum for pledges of wood, לבונה, gold, silver and copper, and lists five cases measured by a קומץ. The גמרא finds sources for wood and לבונה pledges. It then rules that a pledge 'for the מזבח' means לבונה, and begins testing that rule against the עולה and the bird עולה. That discussion continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
וְדִלְמָא כּוּלַּהּ חוֹבָה הִיא,
But perhaps all of it is an obligation,
וְכֹל שֶׁהוּא מִמֶּנּוּ לָאִישִּׁים
and anything from which part goes to the fires
הֲרֵי הוּא בְּ״בַל תַּקְטִירוּ״.
is included in 'you shall not burn.'

The steps (28)
- ChallengeMaybe the whole offering is obligation, so a second handful is forbidden
- ResolutionThe extra portion is burned as fuel, following רבי אליעזר
- ChallengeMaybe the real argument is about רבי אליעזר, not about mixing
- Resolutionרב אשי shows that רבי cannot allow mixing
- Statementרבא offers a new explanation of the dispute
- ProofThe משנה about oil for a sixty-tenth meal offering
- StatementThe Rabbis follow the sixty-log view
- Conclusionרבי follows the one-log view, which creates the doubt
- Statementרב אשי: they argue about bringing a big offering for a small one
- ChallengeBut they already argued about this elsewhere
- ResolutionBoth cases are needed
- StatementA memory list for the coming teachings
- StatementMinimum pledge of wood and frankincense
- StatementThe five cases measured by a handful
- StatementMinimum pledge of gold, silver and copper
- StatementHe named an amount but forgot it
- StatementWood can be pledged as an offering, and the minimum is two logs
- Statementרבי holds that the wood is a real offering
- Statementרבא: by רבי's logic, the wood would need קמיצה
- Statementרב פפא: by רבי's logic, the wood needs other wood to burn on
- QuestionWhat is the source that לבונה must be at least a קומץ?
- ResponseA הקש links לבונה to the handful taken from a מנחה
- StatementA pledge 'to the מזבח' with nothing named means לבונה
- StatementHe named something but forgot what: he brings everything
- ChallengeIsn't an עולה also entirely burned on the מזבח?
- ResolutionThe עולה's hide goes to the כהנים
- ChallengeIsn't a bird burnt offering entirely burned?
- ResolutionThe answer begins: 'There are...'
