A נזירה whose husband annulled her vow, and the four rams of a נזיר brought without bread
Overview
This amud continues the משנה about a married woman who set aside animals for her נזירות offerings before her husband annulled her vow. רבא explains that even according to רבנן, the husband transfers the animal to her only for what she needs, so after the annulment it is not holy. The גמרא then asks how a married woman can own her own animal at all. רב פפא answers that she saved from her food, and a second answer is that someone gave it to her on condition that her husband has no rights in it. Next, שמואל challenges אבוה בר איהי to explain a ברייתא listing four rams of a נזיר that come without bread: his, hers, after death, and after atonement. The גמרא explains each one. 'Hers' is our משנה, and 'his' is a father who made his son a נזיר. The ram after death comes from a ברייתא, and the ram after atonement is learned by logic, since neither can bring atonement. The גמרא asks why the list leaves out a שלמים slaughtered שלא כמצותן, and answers that the list only counts offerings brought properly. Finally it returns to the ruling about a dead נזיר's unspecified money in order to discuss it.
Opening lines
רָבָא אָמַר: אֲפִילּוּ תֵּימָא רַבָּנַן,
Rava said: You can even say it follows the Rabbis,
כִּי מַקְנֵי לַהּ — נָמֵי
since even when he transfers it to her,
בְּמִלְּתָא דִּצְרִיכָא לַהּ,
it is for a matter that she needs;
בְּמִילְּתָא דְּלָא צְרִיכָא לַהּ — לָא מַקְנֵי לַהּ.
for a matter she does not need, he does not transfer it to her.
