How a dead נזיר's unassigned money goes to נדבה according to רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש, and רבא's proof from the ברייתא of רבי ישמעאל that חטאת-related items cannot become other offerings.
Overview
The משנה taught that if a נזיר set aside money without assigning it to specific offerings (סתומין) and then died, the money goes to voluntary offerings (נדבה). The גמרא asks how this can be, since part of that money was meant for a חטאת. רבי יוחנן answers that it is a special tradition (הלכה) for a נזיר. ריש לקיש learns it from a פסוק: the leftover of a vow becomes a נדבה. The גמרא challenges ריש לקיש: by his reasoning, even assigned money (מפורשין) should go to נדבה. רבא answers with a ברייתא from the school of רבי ישמעאל. It teaches that the offspring and substitutes of קדשים are offered like the original animal, but the word ״רק״ leaves out the offspring of a חטאת and the substitute of an אשם. So money assigned to a חטאת cannot become a different offering. רבי עקיבא gives a different source for the אשם, ״אשם הוא״. The גמרא then looks closely at the ברייתא and asks why anyone would think these animals should be left to die. It begins to answer, and the answer continues on the next amud.
