Whose view the משנה follows on vows of affliction, and a dispute about a vow that covers two loaves, only one of which causes real suffering
Overview
The גמרא says that our משנה, and in fact the whole פרק, follows רבי יוסי, as רב הונא taught. It then explains what רבי יוסי means when he says a husband 'cannot nullify.' He cannot cancel these vows as עינוי נפש, but he can still cancel them as vows between him and her. Next comes a new case: a woman vowed off two loaves, and giving up one would cause her suffering but giving up the other would not. שמואל says that since the husband can cancel the vow for the first loaf, he can cancel it for both. רבי יוחנן says he can cancel it only for the loaf that causes suffering. A second version presents רבי יוחנן's ruling as his answer to a question from רב אסי. רב אסי then begins to challenge רבי יוחנן from a משנה about a woman who vowed to be a נזיר, and the challenge continues on the next amud.
