Topic

Spreading a cloth to interrupt a meal for קידוש and הבדלה, when one may start a meal on ערב שבת and ערב פסח, and whether קידוש heard in the בית הכנסת counts

Overview

This amud opens by finishing a ברייתא that says one must interrupt a meal for הבדלה just as for קידוש. The גמרא suggests that 'interrupt' means removing the table (עקירת שולחן), which would challenge the ruling that a cloth is enough. It rejects this: spreading a cloth (מפה) over the food also counts. A story about רבה בר רב הונא at the house of the ריש גלותא, along with a supporting ברייתא, shows that if the table is already out, one spreads a cloth and makes קידוש. Next, the גמרא points out two ברייתות that contradict each other. One says רבי יהודה and רבי יוסי agree that one may not start a meal; the other says they agree that one may. The first refers to ערב פסח. The second refers to before the ninth hour, while their argument is only about after the ninth hour. Finally, a new topic begins: people who heard קידוש in the בית הכנסת. רב rules that they fulfilled קידוש but not the ברכה on wine, and שמואל's differing view continues on the next amud.
