קידוש בבית הכנסת and קידוש במקום סעודה: the views of רב, שמואל, and רבי יוחנן
Overview
This amud continues the מחלוקת about people who hear קידוש in the בית הכנסת. רב holds they fulfill קידוש, and שמואל holds they do not. The גמרא explains why each side still keeps the familiar practice. For רב, the home קידוש is for the family. For שמואל, the shul קידוש is for guests who eat there. שמואל's view comes from his rule אין קידוש אלא במקום סעודה, and רב ענן בר תחליפא shows that this rule applies even when moving within one house. רב הונא and רבה are shown to follow the same rule. The גמרא then explains why רבה's practice does not contradict אביי's report that he usually followed רב: he followed רב's stringencies but not his leniencies. Finally, רבי יוחנן says that shul קידוש even covers the wine ברכה. The גמרא begins showing that this fits his ruling on changing wine, a quote that continues on the next amud.
