Leaving the meal (עקירה): רבי יהודה vs. the רבנן, רבי יוחנן's defense, and support for רב חסדא; then a meal interrupted by שבת

Overview

Earlier, רב חסדא taught that foods whose after-ברכה must be said where they were eaten (like bread or wine) need no new ברכה if a person leaves and comes back. Other foods do need a new ברכה. The גמרא first shows that the ברייתא which seemed to contradict him is רבי יהודה's minority view. In that ברייתא, the תנא קמא says friends who step out to the בית הכנסת need no new ברכות, while רבי יהודה requires them if nobody stayed at the table. The גמרא reads the רבנן as lenient only for foods needing their after-ברכה in place, and suggests this is another refutation of רבי יוחנן, who holds that changing location never requires a new ברכה. But רבי יוחנן can answer: the ברייתא picked this case only to show how strict רבי יהודה is, so the רבנן may be lenient for all foods. Next, a ברייתא about friends drinking wine who left and returned supports רב חסדא. Finally, the גמרא returns to a meal interrupted when שבת begins. רבי יהודה says to stop for קידוש and ברכת המזון over two cups, and רבי יוסי says one may keep eating. The analysis of that dispute continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

מַאן תַּנָּא עֲקִירוֹת,

Who is the tanna who taught about 'uprootings' (that leaving requires new blessings)?

רַבִּי יְהוּדָה, דְּתַנְיָא:

It is Rabbi Yehuda, as it was taught in a baraita:

חֲבֵרִים שֶׁהָיוּ מְסוּבִּין,

Friends who were reclining at a meal,

וְעָקְרוּ רַגְלֵיהֶם לֵילֵךְ

and they got up (literally, 'uprooted their feet') to go
