The meaning of the משנה's case of slaughtering the קרבן פסח both לשמו and שלא לשמו: does it refer to one עבודה or two עבודות, and how does this fit רבי מאיר and רבי יוסי?
Overview
The גמרא asks whether the משנה's case of a פסח slaughtered with mixed intentions, לשמו ושלא לשמו, happened within one עבודה, which would fit only רבי יוסי, or across two עבודות, which even רבי מאיר would disqualify. It first explains that the question only matters when the good intention comes first. It then tries several proofs that the משנה means one עבודה. First it rereads the משנה's list of slaughter, receiving, carrying and sprinkling as alternative cases, and argues that the סיפא must then be one עבודה so it does not repeat the רישא. That proof is rejected: the סיפא can teach that one may have intention during one עבודה about another, which is the issue רב פפא asked about. A proof from the case שלא לשמו ולשמו is rejected as something the משנה added only to match the case before it. A proof from the next משנה about slaughtering for the wrong eaters is rejected because the two משניות need not match. Finally the גמרא brings the ruling that slaughtering for eaters and non-eaters is כשר. It shows that a two-עבודות reading of that ruling clashes with the rule מקצת אוכלין לא פסלא, and the argument continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
אוֹ דִילְמָא בִּשְׁתֵּי עֲבוֹדוֹת תְּנַן,
Or perhaps it is in two services that we learned (the case of the Mishnah),
וַאֲפִילּוּ לְרַבִּי מֵאִיר
and even according to Rabbi Meir,
דְּאָמַר תְּפוֹס לָשׁוֹן רִאשׁוֹן —
who said 'hold onto the first expression' —
הָנֵי מִילֵּי בַּעֲבוֹדָה אַחַת,
these words apply only in one service,
The steps (19)
- QuestionThe second option: maybe the משנה means two different services
- QuestionWhich order of intentions is the question about?
- ResponseThe question is about 'for its own purpose, then not for its own purpose'
- ProofA source is brought: the משנה's list of four services
- ChallengeWhy would the משנה need to list all four services?
- ProofReading the משנה as different cases shows it means two services
- ProofThe סיפא must be about one service, following רבי יוסי
- RejectionBoth clauses can be two services: the רישא is about thinking on the same service
- RejectionThe סיפא teaches intention from one service about another, which is רב פפא's question
- ProofNew proof opened from "not for its own sake and then for its own sake"
- ChallengeRead as two services, the clause would be obvious
- ProofSo the last case must be one service, and the first case too
- RejectionThe last case is really two services, taught only to match
- ProofA new proof from the next משנה about the wrong eaters
- RejectionThe two משניות do not have to match
- ProofA new proof: for eaters and non-eaters is valid
- QuestionWhat exactly is the case?
- ResponseTesting the reading of two separate rites
- ChallengeThe two-rite reading clashes with a known rule
