Preparations for מילה on שבת and יום טוב, food-preparation limits on יום טוב (mustard, cheese), and אביי's mother's baby-care advice, including when to postpone a מילה.
Overview
This amud opens by finishing a list of baby remedies, then returns to the משנה about a מוהל who did not grind cumin before שבת. A ברייתא teaches that grinding כמון and mixing יין ושמן for a מילה are forbidden on שבת but allowed on יום טוב. אביי challenges this, since רבי מאיר permits mixing wine and oil for a sick person on שבת. A story shows that רבי מאיר was only strict on himself and never retracted his view. The גמרא answers that a מילה needs the mixture beaten, which is forbidden on שבת, but mixing without beating is allowed. Next, אביי and רב יוסף discuss preparing mustard and curdling cheese on יום טוב. Straining mustard looks like בורר, and a wooden coal may not be used to sweeten it. Cheese may not be curdled on יום טוב because it could have been made beforehand without losing quality. Finally, אביי passes on his foster mother's advice on bandaging a מילה and caring for newborns. The amud ends with the rule that a red or pale baby's מילה is postponed, proven by two stories of רבי נתן.
