מוקצה rulings, רב חסדא's practical advice to students and to his daughters, and a משנה about handling animal feed on שבת
Overview
This עמוד opens by finishing some rulings about מוקצה. You may slide an item off a plain reed but not move the reed, though a weaver's tool may be moved. A bundle of vegetables may be moved if animals can eat it, and a meat hook may be moved but a fish hook may not. רב קטינא's comparison about standing in the middle of a bed is rejected. Next comes a long series of practical advice from רב חסדא to poor Torah students: how to buy vegetables, reeds, meat and a linen shirt wisely, how to handle a little bread, and how to protect their clothes and their dignity. Along the way, the גמרא rejects the idea that eating better food violates בל תשחית, because caring for one's body comes first. רב חסדא also teaches his daughters modest behavior toward their husbands, ending with a lesson acted out with a pearl and a clod of earth. The גמרא then returns to the משנה and notes that it does not follow רבי אליעזר בן יעקב. A new משנה follows about clearing feed before animals. The גמרא shows that the חכמים disagree with both of רבי דוסא's cases, and that the dispute is only about a trough that is a vessel. Finally, אביי resolves two conflicting ברייתות about moving feed between animals, and his explanation continues on the next עמוד.
