Bathing, drying, and healing activities on שבת: towels, wearing garments, oiling, the baths of דיומסת, scraping, vomiting and swaddling
Overview
This amud keeps working through the משנה about bathing and healing on שבת. First the גמרא shows that rinsing the whole body is allowed even לכתחילה, following רבי שמעון. It then explains the towel rules: one person may not carry even slightly damp towels, but a group may carry even a soaked one, because they remind each other not to wring it. אביי asks for the הלכה, and רב יוסף lists four lenient authorities: רבי שמעון, רבי, שמואל and רבי יוחנן. The גמרא also answers a challenge to רבי יוחנן from his own rule about a סתם משנה. Next come rules on moving clothes by wearing them, and on oiling the stomach differently from a weekday. The גמרא then discusses the healing baths of דיומסת, including the story of רבי אלעזר בן ערך, who lost his learning there, and the lesson of רבי נהוראי to go to a place of תורה. Finally it explains the משנה's rules on scraping, muddy rivers, inducing vomiting and swaddling a baby. It begins a statement of שמואל about resetting a broken bone, which continues on the next amud.
