Topic

Setting bones and treating dislocations on שבת; the end of פרק חבית; borrowing on שבת without loan wording

Overview

The גמרא rules like שמואל that one may set a broken bone on שבת, even though our משנה says אין מחזירין את השבר. A story shows רב יהודה having רבה בר בר חנה dragged to his lecture, only to learn this very ruling from him. Next, רב אויא asks רב יוסף about positioning his dislocated hand. רב יוסף says the משנה forbids treating a dislocated limb. רב יוסף answers רב אויא's challenge from שמואל's ruling by saying that ruling applies only where it was stated. After the הדרן for פרק חבית, a new chapter opens with a משנה: one may borrow wine, oil, or loaves on שבת, and may leave a cloak as security, but may not say "הלויני". אביי explains that loan wording leads the lender to write, and that on שבת the special wording keeps people aware of the day. Finally, אביי explains why women do not change how they draw water on יום טוב: any change would only add effort.
