Topic
The minimum amounts of food and of liquids for carrying out on שבת, and which parts count toward them
Overview
This amud opens with the last line of the previous discussion, about items that combine because a merchant shows them together as a sample. A new משנה then teaches that carrying out food the size of a dried fig (גרוגרת) on שבת makes one חייב, and all foods combine toward that amount. Shells, seeds, stems, and bran do not count, but רבי יהודה says lentil shells do count because they are cooked and eaten with the lentils. The גמרא asks why bran counts for חלה, and אביי answers that a poor person eats bread with bran, while for שבת the food must be fit for everyone. It then reconciles a ברייתא that has רבי יהודה counting bean shells too: new bean shells count, but old ones do not, because, as רבי אבהו says, they look like flies in the dish. The chapter כלל גדול ends, and a new פרק opens with a משנה listing how much of each liquid makes one liable for carrying it, while רבי שמעון says every liquid is a רביעית. The גמרא explains that the wine amount is enough for a כוס של ברכה, and רב נחמן says that this is a quarter of a רביעית of wine that becomes a רביעית after mixing. רבא begins to bring support for this, and his words continue on the next amud.
