Learning and vessels in the סוכה, when rain lets one leave, and eclipses as heavenly warnings

Overview

This עמוד opens by finishing a point from the previous עמוד: quick review of learning (גמרא) and deep analysis (סברא) are separate activities, shown by a story about the students of רב חסדא. רבא then lists which vessels stay in the סוכה and which go out. The גמרא settles the two versions about a lamp by the size of the סוכה. Next it defines the משנה's rain measure as rain that would spoil a dish of crushed grain. In a story, רב יוסף leaves the סוכה because of splinters, explaining to אביי that for a delicate person this counts as spoiling. A ברייתא teaches that someone who went inside because of rain need not return until he finishes his meal, or until he wakes and dawn rises. The גמרא explains the משנה's parable: the master poured water on the servant, a sign of rejection. This leads to a long discussion of eclipses as heavenly warnings, ending with the comfort that ישראל who do God's will need not fear them. It then lists sins that cause eclipses, and begins a list of sins that cause property to be lost to the government, which continues on the next עמוד.

Opening lines

כִּי הָא (דְּרַבָּה) בַּר חָמָא

As in that situation of (Rabbah/Rava and Rami) bar Chama

כִּי הֲווֹ קָיְימִי מִקַּמֵּיהּ דְּרַב חִסְדָּא

when they would stand before Rav Chisda

מַרְהֲטִי בִּגְמָרָא בַּהֲדֵי הֲדָדֵי,

they would quickly run through the tradition together,

וַהֲדַר מְעַיְּינִי בִּסְבָרָא.

and then they would analyze the reasoning.
