When can the offspring of a holy animal itself be offered according to רבי אלעזר? The גמרא gives רבא's and אביי's explanations, with challenges from two ברייתות about a female set aside for a פסח.

Overview

The גמרא finishes רבא's explanation of רבי אלעזר: an offspring itself can be offered only when its mother carried that same status. So the offspring of a תמורת אשם is not offered as an עולה; only its money buys one. אביי objects with a ברייתא. In it, a female set aside for a פסח gives birth after פסח, and רבי אלעזר says the offspring itself is offered as שלמים, even though the mother was a פסח. רבא answers that after פסח a leftover פסח becomes שלמים, so the mother did have that status. He also agrees that רבי אלעזר would argue before פסח too. אביי gives his own explanation instead. There is a tradition that the offspring goes wherever the leftover (מותר) goes, so after פסח it is שלמים, but before פסח it is only for the money of a פסח, like its mother. רב עוקבא בר חמא challenges אביי from a ברייתא where רבי אלעזר says the offspring itself is offered as a פסח. רבינא answers that the case is an animal that was already pregnant when set aside, and a fetus is a separate animal (רבי יוחנן), so it became holy directly. מר זוטרא supports this from the ברייתא's words 'it and its offspring.'

אֲבָל גַּבֵּי תְּמוּרַת וְלַד אָשָׁם,

But regarding the offspring of the substitute of a guilt offering,

דְּלֵיכָּא שֵׁם עוֹלָה עַל אִמּוֹ,

where there is no burnt-offering status on its mother,

מוֹדֵי רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר

Rabbi Elazar concedes

דִּבְדָמָיו אִין

that with its money, yes, a burnt offering is brought,

The steps (14)

  1. StatementWhere the mother has no עולה status, only the money is used
  2. Challengeאביי asks whether רבי אלעזר really needs the mother's status
  3. ProofAfter פסח, רבי אלעזר says the offspring itself is שלמים
  4. Challengeאביי spells out the contradiction
  5. ResolutionAfter פסח, a leftover פסח is already שלמים
  6. ChallengeThen רבי אלעזר should argue in the first case too
  7. Resolutionרבא agrees: they argue in the first case too
  8. Statementאביי's own explanation: the offspring follows the leftover
  9. StatementBefore פסח, the offspring is only for the money of a פסח
  10. ChallengeDoes the offspring really just copy the mother?
  11. ProofThe ברייתא: רבי אלעזר says the offspring itself is a פסח
  12. ChallengeThe offspring does not follow its mother in רבי אלעזר's ruling
  13. ResolutionThe ברייתא is about an animal that was already pregnant
  14. ProofThe words "it and its offspring" show the animal was pregnant
