Do animals consecrated for the altar (קדשי מזבח) need העמדה והערכה (standing and valuation) when they are redeemed? This is the argument between רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש about the view of the רבנן.

Overview

This amud is about whether animals given to the altar (קדשי מזבח) need העמדה והערכה, standing before a כהן and being valued, when they are redeemed. It opens by finishing a ברייתא that supports רבי יוחנן: the פסוק about an 'unofferable' animal means an altar animal with a permanent blemish, and the תורה requires standing and valuation for it. Then רב explains ריש לקיש's source from the words 'whether good or bad', which he reads as pointing to בדק הבית. For רבי יוחנן, the word 'אותה' leaves out an animal blemished from the start. The גמרא admits it cannot find a job for 'אותה' in the view of תנא דבי לוי. רב also gives רבי שמעון's opposite reading of the same פסוק, and the גמרא raises a difficulty on that reading too. Next, two ברייתות about consecrated animals that died are used to test רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש. Each side answers by explaining which case the ברייתא is about, and ריש לקיש even reverses the first ברייתא. The amud ends as רבי ירמיה begins a new challenge to ריש לקיש, which continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

הָא מָה אֲנִי מְקַיֵּים

So how do I explain

״וְאִם כׇּל בְּהֵמָה

“And if it be any animal

אֲשֶׁר לֹא יַקְרִיבוּ מִמֶּנָּה

of which they may not bring

קׇרְבָּן לַה׳״ —

an offering to ה׳”?
