Does a חופה with a woman forbidden to the man have legal force? This covers whether it stops her from eating תרומה, and רב ששת's proof from the סוטה oath.

Overview

The גמרא asks whether entering the חופה with a כהן she may not marry stops a woman from eating תרומה, and looks for an argument among תנאים about this. It first ties the question to the argument of רבי מאיר versus רבי אלעזר and רבי שמעון about קידושין. It rejects that link, because קידושין and חופה differ in two ways. It then brings a ברייתא where the תנא קמא lets such women eat תרומה after חופה, while רבי ישמעאל בנו של רבי יוחנן בן ברוקה says they may not. That proof is also pushed off: רבי ישמעאל may simply agree with רבי מאיר and be borrowing the תנא קמא's wording. Next, רב עמרם reports רב ששת's rule that a חופה counts even with women who are forbidden to the man, proven from the סוטה oath that mentions an ארוסה. After rejecting two possible cases, the גמרא settles on one where she was warned and secluded herself as an ארוסה and then entered the חופה without relations. רבא challenges this, and רמי בר חמא answers by adding that her betrothed had been with her earlier in her father's house. The גמרא then starts to test the matching case of a שומרת יבם, a discussion that continues on the next amud.

who say betrothal does not disqualify,
