Where רב's rule comes from (losing תרומה and being unfit for כהונה after relations with an unfit man), whom it covers, and which men trigger it.

Overview

This amud continues an earlier discussion of רב's rule. A woman who has relations with a man who is unfit for her loses her right to eat תרומה and becomes unfit to marry a כהן. רב learns this from the פסוק "ובת כהן כי תהיה לאיש זר". First the גמרא checks that this פסוק is not already used up. It shows that the 'זר' verses and the extra words "בתרומת הקדשים" leave room for רב's rule. Next it finds a source to include a לויה and ישראלית: the extra word "ובת", which works even for the רבנן. A long back-and-forth follows about which source teaches תרומה and which teaches כהונה. It ends with "ובת" for תרומה and a קל וחומר from a גרושה for כהונה. That קל וחומר is allowed because it only reveals the reach of an existing ban. The גמרא then rejects limiting the rule to חייבי כריתות, since "כי תהיה" speaks of men she can actually marry. When it asks about a גוי or an עבד, it points to a separate teaching of רבי ישמעאל, which continues on the next amud.
