Who lets a woman eat תרומה, worrying about a possible pregnancy, and the child of an ארוסה
Overview
This amud finishes a משנה about which relationships let a woman eat תרומה and which take that right away. A כהן's daughter loses תרומה while she carries a ישראל's child. A ישראל woman gains it once she bears a כהן's child, so the son can do more than his father. An עבד never counts as a woman's offspring. A ממזר does count, and so does even a grandson fit to be כהן גדול, who can stop his own grandmother from eating. The גמרא then asks why we do not worry that a woman might already be pregnant. רבה בר רב הונא answers that חכמים worried only about pregnancy within marriage. רב חסדא adds that for the first forty days a fetus is 'just water.' Finally, רב and שמואל argue about a child born to an ארוסה. רבא and אביי debate whether we assume the ארוס is the father, and a second version of their argument begins and continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
עִיבְּרָה — לֹא תֹּאכַל בִּתְרוּמָה.
If he impregnated her, she may not eat terumah.
נֶחְתַּךְ הָעוּבָּר בְּמֵעֶיהָ — תֹּאכַל.
If the fetus was cut off in her womb, she may eat.
הָיָה כֹּהֵן שֶׁבָּא עַל בַּת יִשְׂרָאֵל —
If it was a kohen who had relations with an Israelite woman,
לֹא תֹּאכַל בִּתְרוּמָה,
she may not eat terumah.
