Whose child it is when there are rumors; who counts as offspring for תרומה; and, in the new פרק, why a ערל כהן may not eat תרומה
Overview
The amud opens by finishing רבא's limit on רב's ruling. If a woman is rumored to have been with her ארוס, the child is his, even if she is also rumored with other men. רבא proves this from the משנה 'ילדה תאכל' and a קל וחומר, but אביי answers that the משנה is a case with no rumors at all. The גמרא then explains lines of the משנה. A slave's child is not counted as his father's offspring (שמות 21:4). The words 'וזרע אין לה' teach that even an unfit child like a ממזר counts as offspring. Even the רבנן agree that a non-Jew or slave with a Jewish woman produces a ממזר. The grandmother's saying about the 'little jug' and the 'big jug' ends פרק אלמנה. The new פרק begins with a משנה about a ערל, a טמא, a פצוע דכא and a כרות שפכה, and whether they and their households may eat תרומה. The גמרא then brings the sources that a ערל may not eat תרומה: רבי אליעזר learns it from 'תושב ושכיר' by פסח, and רבי עקיבא learns it from 'איש איש'. The גמרא tests whether 'תושב ושכיר' is מופנה, and that discussion continues on the next amud.
