Whether a טבול יום may do the פרה אדומה service, and whether an ערל may eat מעשר שני

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a proof from a פסוק. The word 'pure' in the sprinkling verse hints that the person is not fully pure, so a טבול יום is fit to do the פרה אדומה service. Then students ask רב ששת whether an ערל may eat מעשר שני. One side says that since פסח learns from מעשר שני about אנינות, maybe מעשר שני learns from פסח about ערלות. The other side says a stricter thing learns from a lighter one, but not the other way around. רב ששת quotes a משנה that lists rules for תרומה and ביכורים that do not apply to מעשר. He argues that if an ערל could eat מעשר, the משנה should have listed that as a difference too. The גמרא answers תנא ושייר: the list is not complete. As proof, it points to the סיפא, which also leaves out a rule: impure מעשר and ביכורים may not be burned for benefit.

Opening lines

״וְהִזָּה הַטָּהוֹר עַל הַטָּמֵא״,

״טָהוֹר״ — מִכְּלָל שֶׁהוּא טָמֵא,

"Pure": by implication, he is impure (in some way)

לִימֵּד עַל טְבוּל יוֹם

This teaches about a טבול יום

שֶׁכָּשֵׁר בַּפָּרָה.
