Who may receive מעשר ראשון, why the לויים were fined, and a new משנה on when a woman eats תרומה or מעשר through her husband or child.
Overview
The גמרא finishes a ברייתא where רבי אלעזר בן עזריה says מעשר ראשון may go to a כהן as well as a לוי, while רבי עקיבא says only a לוי gets it. Each side reads the פסוקים differently. רבי עקיבא points to 'speak to the לויים' and 'eat it in any place.' רבי אלעזר בן עזריה answers that כהנים are sometimes called לויים, and that 'any place' only means no city wall is needed. A story shows רבי עקיבא blocking רבי אלעזר בן עזריה from a garden by turning its entrance toward a cemetery. אמוראים then explain that the לויים were fined for not going up with עזרא, and argue whether the fined מעשר goes to the poor or to כהנים who are טמא. The גמרא brings the פסוק showing the לויים were missing in עזרא's time, plus רב חסדא's teaching about שוטרים. Finally, a new משנה tracks what a woman may eat, תרומה or מעשר, through her husbands and her living children.
