Overview

The amud opens by finishing a ברייתא about the verse 'לַכֶּבֶשׂ הָאֶחָד'. רבנן say it speaks of the afternoon תמיד, so the morning תמיד is learned from it. רבי says the reverse. רבה בר עולא explains רבי's source: 'the one lamb' points back to the lamb already called 'one', which is the morning תמיד. The גמרא then shows how each side learns that an offering must be the best animal, from 'אחד' and from 'ומבחר נדריך'. Next the גמרא returns to the משנה about warming the מקוה for an old or delicate כהן גדול. רבי יהודה says heated iron blocks were dropped into the water. To the question of whether this hardens the iron, רב ביבי answers that the iron never got hot enough. אביי answers that even if it did, a דבר שאין מתכוין is permitted, because hardening iron is only a rabbinic prohibition, so even רבי יהודה allows it. Finally, a new משנה describes the כהן גדול's second טבילה in בית הפרוה and the value of his white linen garments.
