שחוטי חוץ: when an animal counts as fit inside — הואיל, עקירה, and a פסח slaughtered outside during the year

Overview

This amud deals with שחוטי חוץ: one is liable for slaughtering an animal outside the מקדש only if it was fit to be offered inside at that moment. רב חסדא finishes his ruling on the יום כפור goats: before the היכל doors are opened, slaughtering them outside is פטור, because מחוסר פתיחה is like מחוסר מעשה. The גמרא asks whether רב חסדא holds of הואיל, since his ruling on a פסח slaughtered outside during the year implies that a סתמא פסח is פטור. It answers that a פסח needs עקירה to become a שלמים, while the goats need none. Then two reports of רבי יוחנן arrive. רב דימי says a פסח slaughtered outside during the year is פטור either way, because עקירת חוץ is not an עקירה. רבין says it is חייב either way, because a פסח during the year is already a שלמים. רב אשי and רב ירמיה מדפתי disagree over the שלא לשמו case, which shows a dispute with רב חלקיה בר טובי about whether an עקירה done outside counts. Finally the גמרא returns to the goats after the lottery and begins a ברייתא on the verse of שחוטי חוץ, which continues on the next amud.
