Aggadic teachings on curses, the desert complaints about fish, and the wonders of the מן
Overview
This amud is full of אגדה. It opens by finishing a מחלוקת of רבי אמי and רבי אסי about a heavy drinker, then brings their views on dealing with worry and on the snake eating dust. A ברייתא of רבי יוסי then teaches that every curse from הקדוש ברוך הוא still has kindness inside it: the snake, כנען, the woman, and the ground. Next, רב and שמואל argue whether בני ישראל in the desert missed real fish from מצרים or relationships that the תורה later forbade. The גמרא tests both views against several פסוקים and ends with 'both happened.' The rest of the amud describes the מן: the foods it could not taste like, its shape and color, and three readings of the word גד. Several ברייתות teach that the מן revealed hidden truths in court cases, and that where it fell and how ready it was depended on a person's righteousness. Perfumes, spices, and precious stones fell with it, and it had many flavors. The amud ends with רבי יהושע בן קרחה's teaching that meat asked for improperly was given improperly; his contrast with the bread continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
עֵינוֹ בְּכוֹסוֹ,
[whoever casts] his eye on his cup,
עֲרָיוֹת כּוּלָּן דּוֹמוֹת עָלָיו כְּמִישׁוֹר.
all forbidden relationships look to him like level ground.
וְחַד אָמַר: כָּל הַנּוֹתֵן עֵינוֹ בְּכוֹסוֹ,
And one said: whoever casts his eye on his cup,
כָּל הָעוֹלָם כּוּלּוֹ דּוֹמֶה עָלָיו כְּמִישׁוֹר.
the whole world looks to him like level ground.
