The מן (who ate it, why daily, how high it piled) and the five עינויים of יום הכיפורים
Overview
The עמוד opens by finishing a דרשה on 'לחם אבירים אכל איש': the 'איש' is יהושע, linked by an exact match of the word 'איש', and not משה ('והאיש'). Next, רבי שמעון בן יוחי explains with a משל of a king and his son why the מן fell every day: so ישראל would turn to their Father in heaven daily. Two more reasons follow: so it could be eaten hot, and so it would not have to be carried on journeys. רבי אלעזר המודעי then claims the מן piled up sixty אמות high. He proves it from the flood: 'windows of heaven' gave fifteen אמות, and 'doors of heaven' are four times bigger. A ברייתא of איסי בן יהודה adds that kings of East and West could see the מן, and אביי learns from 'כוסי רויה' that דוד's cup holds 221 לוג. The גמרא then returns to the משנה of יום הכיפורים: רב חסדא matches five עינויים to five verses, and drinking counts under eating. ריש לקיש's proof from תירוש is rejected. רב אחא בר יעקב's proof from שכר is then challenged by the case of an intoxicating fig, and that discussion continues on the next עמוד.
