The source for the לאו against slaughtering an offering outside the עזרה: the ברייתא on ויקרא 17, רבי אבין's rejected קל וחומר, and רבי יוחנן's גזירה שוה.

Overview

This amud finishes a ברייתא on ויקרא 17. Offerings consecrated and sacrificed after private altars (במות) were forbidden have both a punishment (כרת) and a warning (אזהרה). Offerings consecrated while במות were allowed but sacrificed outside after the ban get an עשה and a לא תעשה, but no כרת. Because the verse ולא יזבחו עוד is used for that special case, the גמרא needs another source for the general לאו against slaughtering outside. רבי אבין suggests a קל וחומר: if the lighter case is forbidden, surely the case with כרת is forbidden too. רבינא challenges this method from חלב, and רבא answers that every possible source for חלב has its own stringency, so the תורה had to write its לאו. רבא then raises a second challenge from פסח and מילה, which רב כהנא answers by pointing out that a missed פסח can be made up. Finally the גמרא rejects the method itself, since a warning can never be learned from a קל וחומר. It learns the warning instead from רבי יוחנן's גזירה שוה of 'bringing'–'bringing'.
