רבי יהודה's views on invalid slaughter and overnight blood, intent and impurity with food not fit to eat, and the new משנה on how many blood placements bring כפרה.
Overview
The גמרא first asks how רבי יהודה could give lashes for an invalid slaughter, since a ברייתא quotes him saying a חטאת slaughtered in the south brings no lashes. It answers that two תנאים report his view differently. רבי אבא then says that a plan to leave the blood overnight does not stop a later פיגול. רבא offers a proof, but the proof is rejected, and רב הונא refutes רבי אבא from a ברייתא. Two more rulings follow, each with a proof from רבא that the גמרא rejects. The first ruling is about a plan for impure people to eat the meat tomorrow. The second is about liability for eating unroasted פסח meat or unseparated תודה loaves while impure. The perek כל הפסולין then ends. A new משנה teaches how many blood placements are needed for כפרה on the outer and inner altars. The גמרא starts looking for the פסוק behind this rule, and that discussion continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
יְהֵא חַיָּיב?!
Would he be liable?!
וְהָתַנְיָא, רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר:
But isn't it taught: Rabbi Yehuda says:
יָכוֹל חַטָּאת שֶׁשְּׁחָטָהּ בַּדָּרוֹם –
One might think that a sin offering that he slaughtered in the south
יְהֵא חַיָּיב?
he would be liable?
The steps (21)
- ChallengeChallenge from a teaching where רבי יהודה says there is no liability
- ResolutionTwo תנאים disagree about רבי יהודה's view
- Statementרבי יהודה agrees that the offering can still become פיגול
- Proofרבא proves the point from a plan to sprinkle the blood the next day
- RejectionOne intent versus two intents
- ChallengeA ברייתא shows an overnight plan blocks later כרת
- Conclusionרבי אבא is refuted
- StatementA plan that impure people will eat it tomorrow
- Proofרבא's support: meat before זריקה
- RejectionThe proof fails: normal meat becomes fit, but impure people never can eat it
- StatementUnroasted פסח meat and unseparated תודה loaves still carry liability for impurity
- Proofרבא proves it from the אימורים of קדשים קלים
- RejectionThe proof fails because אימורים are fit for the altar
- ProofSecond version: the proof from אימורים that are never eaten
- RejectionSecond version rejected: אימורים are fit for their own purpose
- ConclusionHadran — Closing פרק כל הפסולין
- StatementHow many blood placements are needed for atonement
- StatementOuter altar: what the first placement already does
- StatementInner altar: every placement is required
- ProofSource that one placement is enough on the outer altar
- ChallengeIs that פסוק really meant for this?
